Today’s lesson…Tourniquets 101
I teach ALL the classes from basic first aid all the way up to advanced search and rescue, and I tell all my new folks that the most important skill you’ll learn that will save a life is how to properly use a tourniquet.
- Done way more common than CPR
- Not as dangerous as movies and old paramedics would have you believe
- Really cheap to buy and easy to carry
My family has tourniquets all over the place in our house, cars, first aid kits, Bug Out Bags…you name it, and there’s a tourniquet nearby.
I taught my kids from age 7 on up how to use them. Granted wee man might not be strong enough to twist the windlass, but he sure could tell an adult how to apply it if need be.
It’s also something you could self-apply if no one is around to help should you need it.
Here’s my prescription for you…
- Order a tourniquet. I recommend the CAT from North American Rescue. American made just a few miles away from me.
- Train with it. Read the instructions really well, watch some Youtube videos, sign up for a Stop the Bleed class, or sign up for one of my first aid classes.
- Practice with it. As long as you don’t leave it on forever, you won’t hurt another adult to practice on them every now and then.
- Keep it handy. I keep my most available one in a small first aid bag hanging from my headrest.
You don’t have to get this intense, but it’s really fun to train with your tourniquets in real life scenarios. The pic below is from Sifu Alan Baker’s C-TAC class. We took turns piling into cars and practicing first aid while a driver hit every bump and turn he could find.
So much fun!

This information may not be relevant to you right now, so I recommend one or all of the following…
- Saving it to an email folder titled “Prepared”
- Saving it as a PDF in a file called “Prepared” so you don’t have to worry about your email provider
- Printing it out and putting it in a binder with a word on the front in big fat letters…yes, you know it…”Prepared”.*

Prepared Philosophy
This is my core philosophy on preparedness.
Get prepared NOW as best you can with what you have. It’s better than nothing.
Stay simple. Don’t complicate things.
Upgrade and level up as time, money, resources, or training are available. Never stop improving.
Train and practice often. Always think of yourself as an amateur.
Don’t get complacent. Anything can happen anywhere.
